Breaking Down Your Options for Vasectomy Reversal Surgery
A vasectomy might seem like your best option when you have it, but it is not uncommon for circumstances to change and for men who have had vasectomies to want to start families. The good news is that a vasectomy reversal surgery can help men reclaim their fertility. There are a few different options for vasectomy reversal surgery. The doctor will decide which one is right for you based on a number of different factors, including how long ago you had your vasectomy and how you and your partner plan to conceive. Here is a look at the different surgical options.
Vasovasotomy (V-V)
V-V vasectomy reversal surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. It typically takes two to four hours. During the surgery, small incisions are made on each side of the scrotum to locate the site of vasectomy. Once found, scar tissue is removed. Then, the abdominal and testicular sides of the vas are checked for patency and sperm. If the doctor finds sperm or clear fluid that flows freely, the vas is reconnected. If sperm is not found, further dissection takes place until sperm is located.
Vasoepididymostomy (V-E)
If the fluid found during a V-V procedure is cloudy or thick, a V-E is performed. During this procedure, the vas is connected to an epididymis tubule. Since sperm matures in the epididymis, the vas is attached at the most distal part possible. A V-E is most likely to be needed when the vasectomy was performed more than 10 years prior.
Microscopic Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA)
MESA is the preferred procedure for patients who plan to use in vitro fertilization to conceive. Sperm is extracted directly from the epididymis using an operating microscope. Thanks to the microscope, sperm can be taken with minimal blood contamination and without damaging neighboring structures.
