Reasons it May Take Time to Conceive Following Vasectomy Reversal
Studies show that up to 50% of couples are unable to conceive immediately following a vasectomy reversal. Difficulty conceiving may be due to many factors related to both your health and the health of your partner. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about your inability to conceive following a vasectomy reversal procedure.
Sperm Production
After a vasectomy reversal, it is normal to experience lower sperm production and sperm volume for some time. It may take up to 18 months for your body to produce adequate sperm counts to achieve pregnancy in your partner. Talk to your doctor about receiving a sperm analysis periodically after your vasectomy reversal. This test will reveal your sperm counts and quality to chart your fertility as you recover.
Other Fertility Issues
Approximately one in every ten couples in the U.S. experiences problems with infertility. These problems are unrelated to your vasectomy or its reversal. Infertility may be due to female factors, male factors, or both. If you and your partner have been unable to conceive for one full year after your sperm counts have returned to normal, visit a fertility doctor to discuss your concerns.
Varicoceles
Varicoceles are varicose veins that occur on or near the testicles, and are a common cause of fertility issues in men. Enlarged veins allow too much heat to affect the testicles, reducing sperm counts and quality. Treatment for varicoceles often includes minimally-invasive surgery to repair the problematic vein.
Anti-Sperm Antibodies
It is common for men to develop anti-sperm antibodies (ASA) in the blood following a vasectomy reversal. While the presence of ASAs in the blood does not necessarily preclude pregnancy, in some couples these antibodies can result in fertility issues.
