Recovery Tips Following a Vasectomy Reversal Procedure
Vasectomy reversal is performed through minimally invasive surgical techniques, so it does not require extensive aftercare or recovery time for the patient. However, there are some care tips that will be necessary after the procedure in order to ensure that the best possible outcome is achieved.
If you follow the guidelines below, you will be able to get back to your routine quickly and start working on your family planning goals.
Wear supportive undergarments
After surgery, you will want to wear snug underwear or an athletic supporter both during the day and while you sleep. Undergarments of this type will ease any pain and discomfort while also protecting the sutures applied during the procedure. You should continue wearing supportive underwear for about one month following your surgery.
Use ice packs to control swelling
Cold therapy will numb the surgical site and keep swelling to a minimum, and it should be used for the first 48 hours after surgery. Apply an ice pack for about 10-20 minutes and remove it for an equal period of time. Continue with this pattern of application as needed.
Refrain from rigorous activity
You should be able to walk around the house and return to work quickly if you do not have a physically strenuous occupation. Still, heavy lifting, rigorous exercise, and long periods of physical activity should be avoided for about two weeks. Sexual activity can resume 21 days after your vasectomy reversal.
Use NSAIDs to relieve pain
Pain and discomfort should be minimal after your surgery, and these side effects generally only last about 48 hours. During this time, over-the-counter NSAIDs such as ibuprofen should be sufficient to ease your pain.
